La carrera de un extremo hasta el otro
de la avenida, no tenía más finalidad
que la victoria. Aun más gratuita
que la carrera del atleta en el estadio
que no aguardaba otro premio que el ramo
de olivo o la corona de laurel,
que pronto se marchitan.

Lejos estábamos aún
de anhelar el ramo o la corona
de los atletas; lejos
con más razón de buscar la corona
de la inmortalidad victoriosa,
con la que imaginábamos ceñida la frente
de nuestros muertos queridos.
 The race from one end of the avenue
to the other had no more purpose
than victory. Even more gratuitous
than the athletes' race in the stadium,
who looked for no other prize
than the olive crown or the garland of laurels,
that soon wither.

We were even far
from striving for the crown or the garland
of the athletes; far,
with greater reason, from seeking the crown
of victorious immortality,
which we imagined wreathing the brows
of our dead loved ones.
