SALADIN (im Hereintreten) Da steht das Geld nun noch! Und niemand weiss Den Derwisch aufzufinden, der vermutlich Ans Schachbrett irgendwo geraten ist, Das ihn wohl seiner selbst vergessen macht; - Warum nicht meiner? - Nun, Geduld! Was gibt's? EIN MAMELUCK Erwünschte Nachricht, Sultan! Freude, Sultan! ... Die Karawane von Kahira kommt, Ist glücklich da! mit siebenjährigem Tribut des reichen Nils. SALADIN Brav, Ibrahim! Du bist mir wahrlich ein willkommner Bote! - Ha! endlich einmal! endlich! - Habe Dank Der guten Zeitung. DER MAMELUCK (wartend) Nun? nur her damit! SALADIN Was wartst du? - Geh nur wieder. DER MAMELUCK Dem Willkommnen Sonst nichts? SALADIN Was denn noch sonst? DER MAMELUCK Dem guten Boten Kein Botenbrot? - So wär' ich ja der erste, Den Saladin mit Worten abzulehnen Doch endlich lernte? - Auch ein Ruhm! - der erste, Mit dem er knickerte. SALADIN So nimm dir nur Dort einen Beutel. DER MAMELUCK Nein, nun nicht! Du kannst Mir sie nun alle schenken wollen. SALADIN Trotz! - Komm her! Da hast du zwei. - Im Ernst? er geht? Tut mir's an Edelmut zuvor? - Denn sicher Muss ihm es saurer werden, auszuschlagen, Als mir zu geben. - Ibrahim! - Was kommt Mir denn auch ein, so kurz vor meinem Abtritt Auf einmal ganz ein andrer sein zu wollen? - Will Saladin als Saladin nicht sterben? - So musst' er auch als Saladin nicht leben. EIN ZWEITER MAMELUCK Nun, Sultan! ... SALADIN Wenn du mir zu melden kommst ... ZWEITER MAMELUCK Dass aus Ägypten der Transport nun da! SALADIN Ich weiss schon. ZWEITER MAMELUCK Kam ich doch zu spät! SALADIN Warum Zu spät? - Da nimm für deinen guten Willen Der Beutel einen oder zwei. ZWEITER MAMELUCK Macht drei! SALADIN Ja, wenn du rechnen kannst! - So nimm sie nur. ZWEITER MAMELUCK Es wird wohl noch ein Dritter kommen, - wenn Er anders kommen kann. SALADIN Wie das? ZWEITER MAMELUCK Je nu; Er hat auch wohl den Hals gebrochen! Denn Sobald wir drei der Ankunft des Transports Versichert waren, sprengte jeder frisch Davon. Der Vorderste, der stürzt'; und so Komm ich nun vor, und bleib auch vor bis in Die Stadt; wo aber Ibrahim, der Lecker Die Gassen besser kennt. ............ ............	SALADIN (Entering) The money is still here and no-one knows Where to find the Dervish; I suspect He came across a chess-game on his way - Enough for him to totally forget Himself and me, too. Patience! Yes, what now? FIRST MAMELUKE Sultan, long-awaited news! Rejoice! The caravan from Cairo has arrived Unharmed and loaded with the seven yearly Tribute from the bounteous River Nile. SALADIN Brave Ibrahim! No messenger more welcome! At last! At last! A thousand thanks for this Good news! FIRST MAMELUKE (Expectantly, aside) Well, hand it over! SALADIN What are you waiting for? Be on your way! FIRST MAMELUKE Nothing for a messenger so welcome? SALADIN Why should there be? FIRST MAMELUKE Don't I deserve a tip? Am I to be the first that Saladin Rewarded only with a word of thanks? Fame at last! Am I to be the first With whom the Sultan has been niggardly? SALADIN Then help yourself to one of those money-bags. FIRST MAMELUKE You're sure you don't want me to take the lot. SALADIN What insolence! You've taken two! He means it! He's trying to outdo me in largesse! No doubt, he finds it harder to refuse Than I to give. What has come over me? Why so soon before my days are ended Should I so suddenly wish to change my style? If I don't want to die as Saladin, As Saladin, then, neither should I live. SECOND MAMELUKE O Sultan! SALADIN If you've come here to report... SECOND MAMELUKE The caravan has just arrived from Egypt! SALADIN That, I know. SECOND MAMELUKE So I'm too late! SALADIN Why so? Your good intention earns you a reward: Here, take a purse or two, then - SECOND MAMELUKE Make it three! SALADIN All right, if you can count! Just help yourself! SECOND MAMELUKE A third man's on his way, if he can make it - SALADIN How so? SECOND MAMELUKE Fact is, he likely broke his neck. The moment we three heard the gold was coming. We sprang to horse and off we rode to tell you. The first man fell, so I then took the lead And stayed ahead till we were in the town, Where Ibrahim, that loudmouth, better knows His way about the lanes. ............ ............
