Tell me, in which country, tell me Now lies Flora, belle of Rome? Or Alcibiades, or Thais, Half-cousin from a different home? Where is the most wise Eloise, For whose love Peter Abelard Was neutered and turned monk? All these For love endured a fate most hard. And, similarly, where now’s the queen Who had Buridan, out of fear, Tied in a sack, dropped in the Seine? Where are the snows of yesteryear? Queen Blanche of Castile (legend is She sang just like the Sirens sing), Big-footed Berthe, Beatrice, Alice, Arembourg, once heir to Maine’s king, And Joan the Good of Lorraine, burnt At Rouen and to memory dear: Where, Holy Virgin? What have we learnt? Where are the snows of yesteryear? Prince, you’ll enquire this week in vain Where they are: nor twelve months you’ll hear.
