Circe Maia was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1932 and spent most of her life in the
provincial town of Tacuarembó. She spent her working life as a teacher of philosophy
and languages, and has written poetry since her early days. She has translated poetry from
English and Greek, and her own poems have been translated into Swedish as well as English
(published by Brindin Press).
In 1997 she was the subject of a 13-page tribute in the influential Argentinian "Diario de Poesí"a - not the first time that organ had reported on her work. In 1999 the Norma Group published the first volumes of a new translation of Shakespeare, believing that each generation should produce its own new translation of such works. Translators from all over South America contributed to this series, and Circe Maia was selected to translate "Measure for Measure".
A collection of Circe's poems appears as Virtual Book 10.
